The Porsche Carrera GT is a car that could be talked about for hours. This car came to life because of a change in priorities within the Porsche company. The heart of the engine in the Carrera GT was originally developed to be raced in Formula 1 but was deemed too large, heavy and unreliable, so it never saw the track. Porsche then altered the engine for Le Mans racing and put the engine into Porsche’s Le Mans Prototype 2000 (LMP2000) before their priorities changed AGAIN and Porsche took their time to focus on a revenue stream rather than dominating the race track. At that time, Porsche built the Cayenne which was a huge success generating lots of profit, but in the early 2000s Ferrari was releasing the Enzo, Mercedes and McLaren were teaming to develop the SLR, and in an era of hyper cars, Porsche wanted to have a representative too. So with a short timeline to work with, they took the naturally aspirated V10 that had been developed with intentions of being a race engine, and dropped it into the Carrera GT.
The race car trends don’t stop at the motor, the body is built around a carbon fibre monocoque, it is fitted with push rod suspension, and a light carbon ceramic clutch means the engine revs are very responsive to the drivers input. The result here is simply a street legal race car.
The Carrera GT has a reputation of being a hard car to control. At normal speeds the car is cooperative but the combination of feel and sound can easily urge the driver to push the car harder. We believe that the reason many Carrera GT’s have had accidents is because the car tempts the driver into driving beyond their skill level, to a point to where the Carrera GT is very difficult to control. The car must always be driven with care and respect before you meet it’s split personality.
We are confident that this Carrera GT is one of the most complete examples in the world. The original owner began documentation prior to even purchasing the car. Documents begin in 2003 when he was invited by Porsche in Leipzig for a tour of the manufacturing facility and to test the Carrera GT. The owner documented his stay and the car is also in company with the original magazine ad which attracted the owner to purchasing this specific Carrera GT. The window sticker, tags, all service records and all of the articles along with a Carrera GT (briefcase, lumbar supports, tools etc.) also remain with the vehicle.
The Carrera GT has become a driving legend, and although history seems to repeat itself, no car will EVER be developed like this and offered to the public again.
