2008 Audi RS4
The B7 Audi RS4 is an extremely significant car for the modern era of sport specific Audis. Although Audi had already been making cars with ‘RS’ badges, the RS4 hits a sweet spot blending performance, design, usability, and technology.
The RS4 launched in 2006 and was the sport specific model for the more common A4 lineup. Today, design teams go to extreme measures to differentiate their ‘sporty’ cars from their more common line, but in the mid 2000s, these design changes were more subtle. The RS4 was given flared fenders, larger intakes, unique front and rear bumpers, larger exhaust tips, and bespoke 19’ rims. Because the changes from the standard A4 were relatively subtle, it takes a trained eye to recognize an RS4. Therefore this car is a chameleon in everyday traffic.
The engine is the highlight of the RS4. The naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8 produced 414hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. This V8 not only produces plenty of low-down-torque but also creates power all the way to its high 8250rpm redline. This engine is so fond of that Audi used it as the powerplant for the first generation R8. During Top Gears episode featuring the RS4, Jeremy Clarkson said he believed he was sitting four feet from one of the greatest engines ever made. The engine is incredibly fun to play with throughout its rev range making the car a pleasure to drive whether you’re cruising or driving spiritedly.
Audis Quattro system adds to the cars usability. The ‘pro’ is that with a good set of winter tires the RS4 becomes extremely capable in tough conditions. Unfortunately, the down side is that many RS4s have had rough lives and have high milage because it is a great all season car, making it difficult to source a good example.
In our opinion the RS4 is one of the best all-round daily’s. The car can be dressed up or down to fit any occasion. We always find ourselves reaching our destination and saying “this has to be one of the greatest cars ever”.
