1989 Singer DLS

'Amber Commission'

Singer Vehicle Design is a California-based company that has gained international recognition for its extraordinary craftsmanship and dedication to reimagining and restoring classic Porsche 911s. Founded by Rob Dickinson in 2009, Singer has become a symbol of automotive artistry while restoring cars with the mindset of ‘Everything Is Important”.

Singer's philosophy revolves around taking vintage 964 Porsche 911s, and transforming them into bespoke, high-performance works of art. Their objective is to merge the timeless elegance and character of the original Porsche 911 design with modern engineering and performance, creating a car that is both a work of art and thrilling to drive.

The process begins with a donor vehicle, which is meticulously disassembled. From a bare chassis, Singer's talented engineers and designers work closely with the owner to create a completely customized look and driving experience. The result is a unique masterpiece, tailored to the owner's preferences, from the choice of materials to the finest details of the interior and exterior.

Singer's attention to detail is unparalleled, with an emphasis on hand craftsmanship, exquisite materials, and high-quality finishes. Every Singer Porsche takes several months to complete. Their commitment to precision is not limited to aesthetics; they also upgrade the car's performance, handling, and reliability, making it a genuine driver's car, which is extremely important for their clientele.

Singer's "Dynamics and Lightweight Study (DLS)" was their swing at perfection. Singer only built a total of 75 DLS’. The DLS began its life as a clay model in 2014. Crafted by Rob Dickinson himself, his dream was to create the pinnacle of a normally aspirated air cooled 911. To accomplish this, Singer collaborated with Williams Advanced Engineering (a division of the Williams Formula 1 team), Michelin, BBS, Bosch, and other companies known for their expertise in motorsport and engineering.

In the opinion of many, what Singer created with the DLS stands high above all other restorations from both an artistic and engineering point of view. The beauty of the DLS is that it takes a trained eye to recognize one. To many, the DLS will just look like the sexiest 964 you’ve ever seen. However, once up close and personal you can begin to notice the extent of the build. Stance, parts, fit and finish is only the beginning. You can spend hours looking at how Singer managed to re-create a 964 with the best technology from today.

The DLS is simply the sharpest driving car we’ve experienced. The 4 valve per-cylinder air cooled flat six that was designed by Williams Advanced Engineering produces around 500hp, which isn’t a lot by today's standards, however the engine reacts incredibly fast. Add this to the fact that this engine is placed into a lightweight 964 chassis, and you realize that this is the beginning of interacting with a masterpiece of engineering.

The feel of all of the controls (clutch, steering, gearbox etc.) are all ‘bang on’. It’s an expression of Singers focus and attention to detail.

The magic of the DLS is how Singer pulled all of these parts together to work as one and convey a feel to the driver that is sharper and more visceral than modern cars. It blows our mind every time we exit the car and remind ourselves that we were just driving a 964. The extent of the engineering- both mechanical and aesthetic- make it feel as though the car was manufactured rather than restored.
